My Dear Sisters and Brothers,
As I wish you and your near and dear ones, a happy New Year, I also would like to take this opportunity to thank God for the fruitful year 2019, which went by. The universal Church rings in the New Year with the great solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, celebrated each year on 1 January.
Although the Church, through her wisdom, bestowed this grand title on Mary, yet the biggest lessons that we can learn from Mary was her humility and obedience to God. At the time of the annunciation, Mary was obedient to God’s message and desire for her; in her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), her humility was manifested by her glorifying God.
Mary our Mother is our ideal teacher of the faith; all we need to do is to follow her example of humility and obedience to God’s will for us in our lives. Her faithfulness to God is immeasurable and because Mary was faithful to God’s word, she was entrusted with the greatest task of bringing His son into the world for our salvation. And when we put our trust in Mary, we can be sure that She will lead us closer to her son Jesus.
In a few days, we shall be celebrating the feast of the Three Kings; I am reminded of a quote; the Three Kings came and visited Jesus, paid their respects by offering gold, myrrh and frankincense, but they returned to their homes another way; of course, they did, for nobody who encounters Jesus goes away unchanged.
We have now encountered Jesus in the manger, let us now begin this new year by leading Christ-centric lives throughout.
I offer my prayers for all your intentions and may God continue to shower His blessings throughout this year of 2020.
In Christ,
+Bishop Alwyn
