Known as the ‘Smiling Bishop’, Rev. Bishop Emeritus Alwyn Barreto was the first bishop of our diocese since its formation. He was born on 22 December 1952, in Goa. He was ordained a priest on 13 October 1979 and a bishop on 5 October 2005 for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sindhudurg. He retired on 8 October 2024.
Bishop Alwyn Barreto is known for his exemplary pastoral qualities and a heart on fire for God and the poor. Loved by many in the diocese and around the world, he is known for his holiness, humility and simplicity.
