The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sindhudurg is a vibrant and growing community of faithful Catholics. As the spiritual heart of the Catholic community in the area, the current cathedral building, Milagris Cathedral, has served its purpose for decades. The current structure is dilapidating year after year, and the structure is urgently needed to be rebuilt.
The need for a new cathedral building has become increasingly evident, driven by several compelling reasons.
- Growth of the Congregation: Over the years, Milagris Cathedral has experienced a significant increase in its congregation. The existing cathedral may no longer be able to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Currently, our Eucharistic celebrations lead to overcrowding, making it uncomfortable for everyone.
- Infrastructure Ageing: Like all old buildings, the current structure is showing signs of ageing, with wear and tear affecting its structural integrity. With escalating renovation and maintenance costs, it’s financially impractical to continue investing in an ageing structure.
- Community Outreach and Services: The new cathedral building could facilitate enhanced community outreach programmes and services. It will include spaces for comprehensive community-centric activities that align with the diocese’s mission to serve and support its members.
The Diocese of Sindhudurg’s need for a new cathedral building stems from the imperative to accommodate a growing congregation, address structural concerns, meet modern functional requirements, enhance community services, and create a lasting architectural legacy. Such a project would not only support the spiritual needs of the Catholic community but also contribute positively to the cultural and social fabric of the region.
